Is a Dog Collar and Dachshund a good combination?
Dachshunds have seen a surge in popularity over the last few years – and as soon as you meet one, it’s easy to see why. This is why many veterinarians and dog trainers recommend that you prevent your Dachshund from jumping up on furniture or running downstairs too often. It’s an attempt to try to limit any activity that jars or puts added stress on their long spinal column.
A collar pulls on the neck and can result in neck or back trauma, particularly if you have to yank your Sausage Dog hard during walks to avoid cars, street hazards, or other dogs. Originally bred to hunt badgers, Dachshunds are built more for short explosive sprints. Not to mention that collars can also slip off during a walk.
Would a Harness be a better choice for a Dachshund?
Dog harnesses are incredibly popular amongst Dachshund owners — and with good reason!
Firstly, some harnesses are able to distribute pressure more evenly, which helps reduce pressure on the Dachshund’s neck and to protect against the breed’s propensity for spinal issues later in life.

What to look for while choosing a harness for your Dachshund?
Finding the right fit in a Dachshund harness can be particularly challenging. Their long back, broad chests, short legs, and muscular builds aren’t well-suited for a lot of the harnesses on the market.
Dog’s shoulders have a wide range of movement, which should not be restricted by a harness. Because of this, it’s recommended that dogs wear a ‘Y’ shaped harness, rather than the ones that have a straight bar across their chest.
Also lots of regular harnesses may not be a good fit for Dachshunds because they’re too short (a sausage dog’s body is longer than the bodies of many other smaller breed dogs). So, when looking for a Dachshund harness it helps to pay attention to the length of the harness.
