Dachshund Dog Harness Review Australia

Is a Dog Collar and Dachshund a good combination?

Dachshunds have seen a surge in popularity over the last few years – and as soon as you meet one, it’s easy to see why. They are rugged little guys with lots of energy, they are also an outdoor-loving dog breed. Walking is excellent exercise for Sausage Dogs and helps these obesity-prone pups keep off the pounds and maintain a muscular and healthy build.

Walking is a great choice for Sausage Dogs 👍 but Collars are not 👎

When it comes to Dachshunds a collar is not the best choice. Their famous hotdog figure is also their vulnerable point, leaving them prone to spinal injury, painful back ailments, ruptured discs, and in extreme cases even paralysis. This is why many veterinarians and dog trainers recommend that you prevent your Dachshund from jumping up on furniture or running downstairs too often. It’s an attempt to try to limit any activity that jars or puts added stress on their long spinal column.

Collars can add stress and strain to Dachshund’s long spinal column

A collar pulls on the neck and can result in neck or back trauma, particularly if you have to yank your Sausage Dog hard during walks to avoid cars, street hazards, or other dogs. Originally bred to hunt badgers, Dachshunds are built more for short explosive sprints. Not to mention that collars can also slip off during a walk.

Would a Harness be a better choice for a Dachshund?

Dog harnesses are incredibly popular amongst Dachshund owners — and with good reason!

Many pet parents prefer a harness for walking and training their Dachshund

Firstly, some harnesses are able to distribute pressure more evenly, which helps reduce pressure on the Dachshund’s neck and to protect against the breed’s propensity for spinal issues later in life.

Unlike dog collars, a properly fitting dog harness will not put extra strain on the discs in your Dachshund’s neck or back. Why is this important? Because Dachshunds are prone to Intervertebral Disc Disease, which is a condition where intervertebral discs between the dog’s spinal vertebrae bulge or burst.

They’re also handy for better control and leash training. Dachshunds may be small, but they’re mightily determined sniffers with powerful prey drives.

But be aware – if you pick the wrong harness, they’re prone to slip out and escape.

What to look for while choosing a harness for your Dachshund?

Finding the right fit in a Dachshund harness can be particularly challenging. Their long back, broad chests, short legs, and muscular builds aren’t well-suited for a lot of the harnesses on the market.

Dog’s shoulders have a wide range of movement, which should not be restricted by a harness. Because of this, it’s recommended that dogs wear a ‘Y’ shaped harness, rather than the ones that have a straight bar across their chest.
Also lots of regular harnesses may not be a good fit for Dachshunds because they’re too short (a sausage dog’s body is longer than the bodies of many other smaller breed dogs). So, when looking for a Dachshund harness it helps to pay attention to the length of the harness.

Haqihana ‘Long’ Harnesses are a great choice for Dachshunds and Miniature Dachshunds

All Haqihana Harnesses are “Y” shaped harnesses and their ‘Long’ version is a particularly great choice for breeds of dogs with a longer body. The ‘Long’ version is based on the ‘Standard’ version, but has longitudinal elements that correspond to the next size up. For example, the SL (Small Long) has the chest circumference of the Small but is long on the back and on the sternum like the Medium. This shifts the chest strap rearwards by about 5 cm compared to the ‘Standard’ harness ensuring there is no rubbing under the armpits of longer breeds of dogs.

The Haqihana design, with dual side release buckles, makes it easy to put the harness on and off. Simply slide the harness over your dog’s head and clasp the side buckles together – you don’t have to fiddle and manhandle their short legs at all!

For adventurous pups who like exploring outdoors, durability is one of the priorities. Haqihana harnesses are made to last year after year and are the only harness on the market to be backed with a five year guarantee.

They are light, comfortable and durable, whilst providing maximum security. Perfect for beach days, rainy days, romps in the mud, and even snowy sidewalks. And with a big range of colours available, as well as a matching dog leash, the two of you will stand out when you take a stroll.

If you are looking for a Dachshund Harness, the Haqihana ‘Long’ dog harness is the perfect choice!
